We believe recycling is about creating solutions, not creating future problems.
Globally 75% of all textile ends up as waste which means that valuable raw materials are being destroyed. In the meantime, the demand for new raw materials is permanently on the rise. So it’s incredibly weird that we are not processing raw materials which we have already been using and which are now just having a useless life in in our closet in a smarter way.
Even though a lot is happening already in the field of recycling and reuse of raw materials, only 1% of collected textile is reused to produce new high-end textile products. How come? Materials mainly get a second life in less qualitative applications or different materials are being mixed, which makes it impossible to separate them afterwards. Reusing recycled material is only one aspect. How you do this, how you guarantee the quality and how you recycle successfully is a much bigger challenge.
of the supply chain
We organize the selective collection of old textiles ourselves. In collaboration with our partners from the social economy, we sort the textiles on type, composition and potential pollution. Consequently, we know where our raw materials come from and we create a maximum impact on the quality of the recycled fibres later in the process. Moreover, this process is fully transparent and every step is being documented.
We aim for the highest possible percentage of recycled material, emphasizing post-consumer flows. This is material which is collected from consumers after its use. In order to ensure that the end product is recyclable again, we mix the recycled fibres with new fibres from the same kind of materials. By doing so, we will never mix natural and renewable fibres with synthetic ones. The final composition can be checked thanks to our use of the mass balance. Wherever possible, we relate to the Global Recycling Standard.
In order to ensure that the final product meets the highest possible standards, we test the material on different moments throughout the process. Together with an independent knowledge centre, we have developed a test protocol in order to exclude the presence of harmful substances. This test pushes the limits of existing tests, because the composition of every production batch is always different. Besides this, we also test the yarn and fabric on their mechanical characteristics, like shrinkage or tenacity. All these tests are performed by an independent party, the results are shared with the client afterwards.
We help frontrunners to close the loop.
Urban Fibres® not only allows us to offer ready-made fabric, but we can also set up specific closed chains in collaboration with a brand or a producer. With this application, we reuse the recycled raw materials to produce new yarn and fabric.
Do you want to work with a circular fabric, made of recycled textiles with a premium quality guarantee? Currently, we offer a denim fabric made of 56% recycled denim, 23% Greek cotton and 21% Tencel®.More information about our fabrics
